Whenever Hip-Hop sonically meets Soul legend Marvin Gaye its always the inception of a classic. Indianapolis, IN producer, Maja7th was inspired earlier this year to put together a 9-track 'instrumental' EP "Songs In The Key Of Marvin" as a tribute to the genius.
With fresh arrangements, Maja7th built this EP with a selection of atomised samples and acapellas procured by DJ TopSpeed from various songs off his catalogue, re-purposed each of them using live instrumentation, birthing new vitality into the motown standards.
Cut from a similar cloth to Madlib and 9th Wonder, the Indiana musician defines musicality highlighting his extensive repertoire using an array of instruments throughout all 9 blends including piano, retro synths alongside his MPC, with some input from Jerome Sloss [Saxophone] and Andrez Allen [Bass] on the collaboration "When You Want Me."

Tying a bandana over his eyes, he set off on a groggy adventure through the aisles of NYC’s Good Records and selected three albums at random: The Impressions ‘Three the Hard Way,’ Charles Wright’s ‘Rhythm and Poetry,’ and ‘Songs’ by Bill Perry. Strangers, who’s been working with Joey Bada$$ & co since ‘1999’ mixtape days, recently released his own debut album ‘Consumers Park.’ Despite a torrential downpour and a hard night of drinking the night before he chopped up The Impressions to perfection. Decyphered: Lil Durk | On Being "Signed to the Streets" Life in Chicago and more...
What does it mean to be ‘Signed to the Streets’? Who better to ask than Lil Durk who released a mixtape of the same name back in 2013? “I wasn’t big on being a rapper for real,” Lil Durk said during a recent visit to Mass Appeal HQ. “I used to be mad when people were like, ‘Oh he a rapper.’” At the time Durk was deep in the street life of Chicago.
“Shootouts, getting locked up—everything that come with the streets, I signed up for,” he explained in our latest episode of Decyphered. “That situation with Def Jam came up so fast and unexpected.” Now that Durk is no longer with the label, he’s focused on building up momentum as an indie artist—and he says ‘Signed the the Streets 3’ is coming soon. Rhythm Roulette | Carnage
“Vinyl & guacamole!” That’s how Carnage gets his creative juices flowing. Born and raised in Guatemala, Carnage grew up fascinated with producers like DJ Khaled and DJ Drama. He would go on to become a major player in the fusion of EDM sounds with vocals by hip hop artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Young Thug. But don’t get it twisted—Carnage can chop samples too, as he demonstrated when he accepted MASS APPEAL’s Rhythm Roulette challenge. Working with randomly selected albums by the Jacksons, Rick James, and Gladys Knight & The Pips, he got down to work chopping and cooking, pitching and reversing.
