An artist’s music often reflects its surroundings, and the tracks on Khalid’s ‘American Teen’ album were inspired by the friendship that the 18-year-old singer-songwriter discovered when he moved to El Paso, Texas a couple of years ago. Khalid has been interested in music since 8th grade, but in our exclusive LIFT profile, he says he became much more serious about writing and producing his own songs after hitting town with his mom, and falling in with a new set of pals - ones he truly could share his feelings with. “We appreciate each other,” he says of his high school friends, “and I feel it was super necessary for me to tell their stories. We all go through the same stuff, and we’re all growing up together as individuals.”
Cruising, boarding, hanging out – in ‘Becoming Khalid’ we get to meet the singer’s besties, Jerry and Joslin, and they help fill us in on his personality. We were with him on the day ‘American Teen’ dropped – a game-changer for any young artist. “It’s like a whole different shift of the way my life is going to turn out,” he says. “In the span of a couple of hours, my album was number one on the Apple Music charts. Which is crazy.”
The music is instantly enticing, super modern R&B with classic touches, and Khalid’s production has way of establishing a deep mood on each track, especially “Location” “Young, Dumb & Broke,” and “Coaster.” ‘Becoming Khalid’ also follows the singer to a New York studio and looks at the unique way he approaches his writing process, starting with melodies and trying to articulate emotions. He usually sorts out both with a collaborator. “You have to have a sense of trust, because you’re singing about your own heartache…and they’re making a soundtrack to your story.”
Khalid’s personality is front and center in his music, that’s one of the reasons it’s having such an impact. “I feel the reason that teenagers are connecting to my words is because I’m a teenager,” he concludes. “I talk to lots of the fans and they say ‘Know what? I’ve never had someone who I’ve admired that is my age.” Khalid knows that he’s entering a new chapter of life, and the future is all about growth. “We’re all learning together. You’re chasing your dreams, and I want to chase my own.”

Money. Brower. Respect. | The Documentary
Mass Appeal presents the latest documentary "Money. Brower. Respect." featuring Brooklyn's own Gloss Gang.
There’s a t-shaped urban oasis called Brower Park that sits in the center of Crown Heights. Four acres of grass, trees and concrete, surrounded by the blocks that faced riot gear and broken glass during the Crown Heights riots 26 years ago.
Brownstones lining those streets peer almost ominously, as if the energy of the park has drawn them in after years of watching from such a close distance.
It was in this park, where a group of kids came together, bridging the gap from hobby into full-blown rap careers. They called themselves Gloss Gang.
Their videos found their way onto social media over the past few years. Music videos like “Feelin Good” represented quintessential Gloss Gang — awash with ad-libs, their clips feature what seems like half of Crown Heights rapping along with their lines and bouncing to the beat, experiencing something felt more than understood.
The Gloss Gang’s music distances itself from that of bygone Brooklyn rappers, toeing the line between frenetic and melodic with dexterity. They perform only one way it seems, with as many of their friends around them as possible, all rapping along. They don’t give a fuck if you like it as long as they like it.
Such videos provide a small indication of Gloss Gang’s support in their own neighborhood. In a city that’s been handed over to corporations and condominium developers, Brower Park was the place where Swook and Stackz and countless others could live, grow and develop their own unique style.
MASS APPEAL’s latest documentary film, crafted by director Nick Briggs, reveals the struggle and the pain, the highs and the lows of these emerging artists.
You’ll hear from Swook, Stackz, as well as frequent collaborators Bee Staxx, Adrian Lau and their manager Sheriff PJ. You’ll watch them grow through unprecedented access to archival footage spanning a ten-year period. You’ll learn that Gloss Gang’s not really a duo, but in fact a trio (their third member, Vonna Hurk along with affiliated group 2605, were incarcerated earlier this year).
There’s the pain and happiness, tragedy and success all through the eyes of individuals who really live the shit they rap about.
Amidst it all, Gloss Gang still remains stronger than ever. Hungry for more, ready to make their name known. To put their neighborhood on their back.

The video for LEGEND HAS IT plays with the theme of guilty until proven innocent. We live in a world where stronger the truth the greater the opposition. In this story EL-P and Killer Mike are in a police lineup and the cards are stacked heavily against them.
But why is that?
This video is a worst nightmare scenario. high on acid and caught in the system. pitted against icons of innocence in a police line up that doesn't feel real. No bunnies were hurt on the making of this video.

Dreamville fame, at his favorite record store, A-1 Records in the East Village. He was subsequently blindfolded and instructed to pick out three records to sample at random. He ended up with selections from The Supremes, Barry White and Helen Schneider. Not bad, huh?
Elite echoed those sentiments once he reached the studio. “Barry White?” he said while examining the vinyl. “That’s a layup.”
Elite may have several J. Cole and Dreamville gems to his name, but his roots go much deeper. While an intern at Ruff Ryders back in the early 2000s, Elite grinded his way to a Cradle 2 the Grave soundtrack placement and a production credit on Jadakiss’ “Why” remix. Since then he’s helped bolster Cole’s discography with sturdy production, from the mixtapes to 4 Your Eyez Only.

KEMS | Vision Quest
Vision Quest is the first instalment of an ongoing collaborative video series by American graffiti writer KEMS (@allchrome) and Los Angeles based photographer Kingston (@kingstonphoto). The series documents the search and activation of wasted spaces.
In the search for abandoned spots to explore and paint, KEMS discovered abandoned lines of trains out in the desert. Loading up with a stack of Lak Chrome spray paint and a large a-frame ladder, he trekked through the arid landscape to find a discontinued double-decker passenger train – potentially from the 60s or 70s. While the dates are uncertain, in tracing the history of the cars, they were used to convey people from Mexico to San Diego – at one point, this model was used in Chicago.
These adventures brought back the sense of discovery that graffiti originally gave him. In reflection, KEMS says that it seems people were at these locations one day and gone the next. Leaving him to question – “why did people abandon this place?”
Photos from these lurks will be featured in an upcoming zine and accompanied by a special edition Reload by Ironlak spray can. More details to be announced.
