Allan Kingdom | Glass Up
Closed Sessions collective brings artists to their town with a request and a challenge: play a show and create a song, while being filmed. Minnesota rapper Allan Kingdom was up to the task this time around, and the result is “Glass Up (Chi x TC).
Kingdom raps over an Odd Couple sample of The Hics’“Lines.”
The slower beat gives Kingdom plenty of room to try a variety of rhythms and flows—it sounds like this one was fun to make. The audio is below, followed by the Closed Sessions’ making-of video.
Da Sweet Blood of Jesus | Spike Lee | Movie Trailer
Spike Lee's new stylized thriller DA SWEET BLOOD OF JESUS is a new kind of love story. Dr. Hess Green (Stephen Tyrone Williams) becomes cursed by a mysterious ancient African artifact and is overwhelmed with a newfound thirst for blood. He however is not a vampire. Soon after his transformation he enters into a dangerous romance with Ganja Hightower (Zaraah Abrahams) that questions the very nature of love, addiction, sex, and status in our seemingly sophisticated society.

Chance The Rapper & Nico Segal Discuss The Social Experiment’s “Surf” Album
Fader caught up with Chance and other band members Nico Segal, Nate Fox, and Peter Cottontale for a cover story. Chance and Nico spoke with the publication about the forthcoming Surf album.
“Every record has like 50 people on it,” said Chance. “The idea is to make a singular, four-minute-and-30-second song that feels like a year’s worth of music.”
Chance also declared Surf is Nico’s project while also explaining how each person contributes different aspects to the LP – Chance handles the rapping, Peter handles the keys, Nate handles the drum programming, Nico handles the horns.
Nico, a 21-year-old trumpet player, added the LP will be structured in a way listeners will have to take in the entire album to get a taste of the emcee’s part of the project.
“People hear what they wanna hear,” said Nico. “If they only wanna listen to the songs with Chance The Rapper, they’re gonna have to listen to the whole project cover-to-cover because I’m not gonna tell them which songs [he’s on]. The important thing is just to listen. Listen to the music, then send it to your grandma.”
Chance is reportedly working on his untitled debut studio LP as well. It is set to feature OutKast’s André 3000, Roc Nation’s J. Cole, and Odd Future’s Frank Ocean. He will also make an appearance on Madonna’s upcoming Rebel Heart album.

Kembe X Interviewed by Prince Paul, Scion AV All Purpose Show
Kembe X came by the Scion AV All Purpose Show for an extended interview with host Prince Paul. The Chicago rapper who just turned 20 is low-key presence, but he’s powerful on record, as you can hear on the recently released Scion AV Presents: Kembe X EP. Kembe spoke to Paul about his writing process, his songs’ distinctive arrangements (which strangely have their roots in a guitar-playing video game) and making the video for “As I Unfold” with TDE’s Ab-Soul. As for what’s coming up for Kembe X, it could be kids, it could be a trip back to school, or it could be something completely different. Time will tell.

Fresh Dressed Documentary Schools Us On Hip-Hop And Style
Fashion has always had a place in the hip-hop world -- from Kanye West waxing poetic on the importance of style to Run DMC revolutionizing the Adidas sneaker, major labels and trends have influenced the rap game, and vice versa.
One new film is documenting it all by taking a deeper delve into the relationship between hip-hop and fashion. Fresh Dressed: The Revolution Of Fashion Born On The Streets recently debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival and has already generated significant buzz. The film explores the rich background of rap's many uniforms of style, including the relevance it has in today's world.
Directed by Mass Appeal's creative director Sacha Jenkins and co-produced by rapper Nas, the documentary uses a series of perspectives from a star-studded cast, including Andre Leon Talley and Pharrell. The film is is a surefire standout from the rest of the festival's lineup. On the surface Fresh Dressed highlights the ongoing innovation that urban style and music often cultivate while its depth expands on the political and social issues that come with trends like Pumas and baggy jeans.
Representation hits at the heart of the film, as artists, rappers and ordinary people alike have send many messages not only through their actions and words, but with their outfits as well.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, director Jenkins expands on this connection, using issues like gang culture and the crack cocaine epidemic as prime examples of the evolution of style. He says:
"The film jumps from era to era, but if you pay attention, you can see how fashion went from this thing that represented who you were as a gang member to who you were as a crew member, and then it went to commerce."
Furthermore, Jenkins' vision also brings up numerous topics that elevate (or plague) the black and Latino communities in regards to hip-hop fashion, like unofficial celebrity endorsements, money and hopefully, cultural appropriation.
The Fresh Dressed documentary will air on CNN this year but while you wait for that day to come, check out the clip below.
Skywlkr | Rhythm Roulette
For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, we linked up with Danny Brown’s DJ, Skywlkr. We went to Peoples Records in downtown Detroit, where he made his three record selections blindfolded. He ended up with Earl Bostic’s The Best of Bostic, Miki Howard’s self-titled album from 1989, and an electro record from an artist named Nicolas. From there, we went to Skywlkr’s crib, where he attempted to put together a beat out of all three records.

Responsible for Earl Sweatshirt's "Chum" from his recently released album Doris, production duo Christian Rich is the focus of our ongoing Off The Record series. Recalling bringing in Chad Hugo of The Neptunes fame, watch as we're walked through the process of finding the initial melody and the happy accident of recording several vocal samples. The organic and raw nature of the session is evidenced not only by their recollection, but by the final product that is "Chum."

Atmosphere | Ear Blister | Official Video
By 1995, Slug and D Spawn had been rocking together for a few years. However, '95 was seeing rapid growth in the popularity of an infamous collective known as Headshots, of which Atmosphere had become a part. The Headshots crew planned to release a compilation titled "Eighteen Shots On A Bus In The Middle Of Nowhere" in the Fall of that year, featuring The Abstract Pack, Phull Surkle, Urban Atmosphere, Black Hohl, Beyond, and more. Urban Atmosphere's "Ear Blister," was planned to be released on that compilation, complete with a music video. However, the compilation never materialized and neither did "Ear Blister" as an official release, though the song was a prominent fixture in their live performances around this time. For the last 2 decades, fans have been talking about "Ear Blister" and expressing a desire to view the scarcely seen music video. Well, here it is– the full-length version, available for the first time ever!
Be sure to watch out "Moment In Rhymesayers" Video Series on YouTube for more history on the label, artists and staff!

These are the 10 most sugary breakfast cereals (and the 10 least)
Health campaigners have criticised the Government for its “appeasement” of the food industry after it emerged some of the nation’s most popular breakfast cereals contain more sugar than they did in 2012.
The public health campaign group Action on Sugar found 14 out of 50 cereals tested contained at least 33.3g of sugar, or eight teaspoons, per 100g.
You wouldn’t give your child chocolate biscuits for breakfast, yet certain manufacturers are effectively doing that for us.
Kawther Hashem, Action on Sugar

Meet Soulection's New Star Sam Gellaitry From Scotland
Meet Sam Gellaitry, an 18-year-old producer from Stirling, Scotland, who is releasing his debut EP on L.A. label/collective Soulection this February. I'm not sure he wants us to call him Sam G., but I have a feeling people are gonna. Apparently, his dad makes bagpipes, which might go some way to explain his deft handling of a menagerie of percussive sounds on "Temple," the first single from his Short Stories EP.
G. Soulection will release Sam G's Short Stories EP on February 17th (pre-order it here).

KRS-One | Views
KRS-One dropped knowledge on the culture of Hip-Hop in this interview with Jonathan Gasana.
He dove into the deep history that played a great role in the development of the internationally popular musical genre and cultural practice, dating back to the days of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. KRS explained how White America has always been in control of governing Black people's freedoms, and that even though Barack Obama is the current President of the United States, it wasn't Black people who got him voted into office.
He also clarified the distinct difference between Black men and Black boys, who exist within the Hip Hop culture. According to KRS-One, there are no real men in mainstream Hip Hop, and that every rapper involved is only a man stuck in the mindframe of a "little boy." He credited the culture for being heavily influenced by women, and explained how 90% of the rappers who came up from 1981-1991, "The Golden Age of Hip Hop," were raised by single mothers.
Do you agree with KRS-One's views on the lack of real "men" in mainstream Hip-Hop?

Noisey Atlanta | Gucci Mane & Jeezy: Trap Lords - Episode 3
Noisey Atlanta | Gucci Mane & Jeezy: Trap Lords - Episode 3
Thomas continues his conversation with Coach K about the origin of trap music, beginning with Young Jeezy's 2004 mixtape, Tha Streets Iz Watchin (according to Coach). Both Coach and super producer Zaytoven—who rose to prominence alongside Gucci Mane—explain the explosion of the genre and eventual beef between Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane. We quickly learn that Gucci Mane has not only become one of the most significant rappers in the Atlanta scene, but has so much leverage that his opinion can essentially decide the career trajectory of any new rapper trying to make it. What's perhaps most impressive is that Gucci's influence is still just as prominent as ever—even though he's currently locked up until 2016.

Sleepy Tom | Pusher (Original x Club Version)
Fool's Gold family Sleepy Tom and Anna Lunoe combine forces on "Pusher" to give festival‐grade dance music a sorely needed dose of magical realism. ST manages to grow exponentially more awesome as a producer with each new release, composing a crystalline jungle of synth builds and hooting percussion for "Pusher," topped by a heart‐stopping, theme park‐worthy drop. Meanwhile, Anna provides soaring, moody verses that showcase exactly why she's become such a stand‐out voice in a sea of homogenous electro. Together, this duo has managed to craft one of the most triumphant records of this young year. Keep on!

HEAR BJÖRK DISCUSS ‘VULNICURA’’S LEAK AND IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Björk has spoken publicly for the first time about her new album ‘Vulnicura’’s leak and the decision to release the LP immediately in advance of a March schedule.
Talking to Zane Lowe on his Radio 1 show, she discussed the ins and outs of releasing the album online as an immediate response.
“There is no way to say how you should react,” she said. “In my situation, I had one thing going for me - the album was mastered and ready. I don’t know how I would have reacted if it was four months before. And I think also, because of the nature of the album for me emotionally, it’s the sort of subject matter where I really wanted to just get it out of the way, over and done with. It was an immediate album and I did it so quickly and it was like ‘Oh, it’s leaked, let’s just put it out.’”
Elaborating on the album’s subject matter, she said: “I work a lot on my own. I actually like it, I don’t document it at all. It’s quite a secretive place for me. When Arca came, I’d done all the songs already, the strings and structure. A lot of it was done. When he came into it, it was more like a celebration, because he’s total magic.”
‘Vulnicura’ is out now on One Little Indian - read DIY’s initial review here and listen to the Zane interview below.

WORLD’S LARGEST GRAFFITI PHOTOGRAPHED FROM SPACE
UK graffiti artist INSA is known for his GIF-ITI, the large-scale art technique that combines graffiti with stop-motion animation. Over the years, his GIF-fiti have gotten progressively bigger, including this blinking beauty done in conjunction with Melbourne street artist Rone, and this even bigger pretty lady with MadSteez for Pow! Wow! in Taiwan.
Recently, however, the innovator unveiled the world’s largest graffiti and GIF animation in one: a four-frame clip of his 154,774 square foot mural in Rio de Janeiro.
Dubbed “Space GIF-ITI,” the piece was painted by a team of 20. It took four separate stages, coloring in the sections in a paint-by-numbers fashion. INSA couldn’t see the finished product before he got the shot--from space. Each stage was photographed by satellite (it’s that big), and the photos were strung together to create this larger-than-life animation.

WATCH RUN THE JEWELS LIVE IN PARIS
Run The Jewels played La Blogoteque as a part of their Les Soirées de Poche, or Pocket Party series.
Back in December, El-P and Killer Mike turned up the heat in Paris with their dynamic brand of high-energy hip hop. Footage of one intimate show has surfaced, capturing the pair’s entire 36-minute set.
After leading the crowd with a rendition of Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’, Run The Jewels performed numbers such as ’Oh My Darling Don’t Cry’ and ‘Blockbuster Hit Pt. 1′ during the performance, which you can watch in full below.
