Check the Technique Volume 2 | More Liner Notes For Hip-Hop Junkies
Exclusive: The third book focusing on acclaimed Rap albums from author Brian Coleman includes chapters on Ice Cube's "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" and Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..."
Author Brian Coleman’s third book, Check the Technique Volume 2: More Liner Notes For Hip-Hop Junkies, is slated to be released in October.
The 544-page book covers 25 acclaimed rap albums and will be released on Wax Facts Press. The book is available for a limited time pre-sale via Get On Down, which has released collector’s edition versions of such albums as Nas’ Illmatic and Souls Of Mischief’s 93 ’til Infinity.
People who pre-order the book prior to July 24 will receive an autographed copy of Check the Technique Volume 2: More Liner Notes For Hip-Hop Junkies prior to its release, as well as an exclusive 7-inch of Smif-N-Wessun’s 1995 song “Home Sweet Home,” a cut from its Dah Shinin’ album, one of the albums covered in the book.
The Boston-based Coleman released Rakim Told Me: Hip-Hop Wax Facts, Straight From the Original Artists. The ‘80s in 2005 and Check the Technique: Liner Notes for Hip-Hop Junkies in 2007. Chuck D and The Roots’ Questlove are among the artists who have endorsed Coleman’s books.
"Even though I had covered dozens of albums in the past two books, there were still so many more that I felt I needed to do,” Coleman says of Check the Technique Volume 2: More Liner Notes For Hip-Hop Junkies during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. "As always, I go at these books and chapters as a fan. I figure that if I want to know certain things about my favorite albums, so do lots of other people. And I’m very happy with how it turned out. Doing these is a lot of work, but it’s also very satisfying because people seem to get into them. The highest compliment I can ever get is when people say, 'The first thing I would do after reading a chapter is to find that album and listen to it again.'”
Check The Technique Volume 2 Discusses Ice Cube, Raekwon, Smif-N-Wessun Albums
Check the Technique Volume 2 features chapters on Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… and Mos Def & Talib Kweli’s Are Black Star albums, among others.
Coleman says that his forthcoming book features more artistic depth than its precursors.
“The visual aspect of it has been hugely expanded since the last volume,” he says. "This one has over 350 images, gathered from many different places: licensed from photographers who shot these artists back when the albums in the book were out; magazine ads from when the albums were out; some very deep archival items — for example, parts of marketing brochures that the record company put out, talking about how to market these artists, original handwritten lyrics for songs — mostly provided by the legendary [Hip-Hop historian] Bill Adler, from his newly-donated Hip-Hop Archives at Cornell University; and also photos that some of the artists were kind enough to give me.
"I think that having the additional visuals helps the reading experience for consumers, because it’s not just huge chunks of text,” Coleman continues. "It makes it more interactive, in a way. Just like liner notes you might find in a reissue of your favorite album, in any genre.”
Two sample chapters from the book – 3rd Bass’ The Cactus Album, which is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2014, and Smif-N-Wessun’s Dah Shinin’ (from 1995) — can be found here for a limited time:

"The Beginnings" | Interview with Do-Knock @DoKnock_SC3 | Part 1 | #SXSTV
Our Part 1 Interview with Jon Cruz aka Do-Knock (Battle Monkeys, Full Force, Super Cr3w) explores his beginnings of Hip Hop and Bboy'ing. Learning from his brother, watching old VHS tapes, breaking with SFA (sent from above), and his first jam Bboy Summit '99.
Do-Knock shares a lot of knowledge about what breaking inspired him to be, overcoming teachers telling him he couldn't, and a great story about his transition from "Baby Legs" to "Do Knock."
Pay attention to important themes within this interview as he talks about "Crash to Create," something Bboy Ivan would always say to expanding your dance.
Enjoy Part 1 Interview with Do-Knock

NIKE SUMMER 2014 | BRAZIL PACK
WRITTEN BY: KEENAN HIGGINS
NIKE SUMMER 2014 BRAZIL PACK
With the appeal of soccer at an all-time high in Brazil right now, Nike releases a special “Brazil” pack that shows love to both Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The Rio edition features a digital camo-like pattern in green with a similar rainbow pattern near the ankle and heel tab.
This colorway is used on the Nike Lunar Force 1 Mid Jacquard, the Nike Air Max 97 Jacquard and the Nike Tiempo Zoom Mid 94 Jacquard. In contrast, the Sao Paulo edition is completely different in color and range of silhouettes, with the Lunar Force 1 Jacquard, Blazer Zoom Hi Jacquard and Tiempo Mid 94 Jacquard designed over a "stone street"-inspired elephant print.
Check for the entire Brazil Pack to drop at Nike Lab locations on June 26.

NYC Box Truck: Queens w/ Smart Crew
NYC Box Truck: Queens w/ Smart Crew
The international soccer community is in a frenzy this summer thanks to the massive convergence taking place in Brazil. This means folks from different countries, cities, and boroughs even— all over the globe— are at attention and in grand hopes of their team's road to victory. Queens, New York City isn't immune to the highly contagious fever. Considering that the borough is a melting pot of soccer-loving ethnic communities like Colombians, Jamaicans, Mexicans, Germans and Greeks, among others, it certainly won't be difficult to find locals gathered up at bars, restaurants, delis, or even in plain public, tuning in to the play-by-play of the latest match.
It was for this reason that the Queens-founded Smart Crew decided to make use of their special box truck canvas, provided by Nike NYC, to commemorate the spirit of the biggest soccer event on the planet. Formed circa 1997 by original members MEY, SYCO13, and LUK, the diverse squad has been gaining attention and strength since. They approach graffiti in a very collective and calculated manner that very much reflects, not only their name and iconic "S" with graduate cap emblem, but also the diverse unity found in soccer culture. The crew gets down like the teams get down!

NYC Box Truck: Manhattan w/ Micah
The "city that never sleeps" is comprised of five boroughs. However, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone that doesn't categorize Manhattan as the quintessential mainland— no matter what partialness to the others. The 13-mile stretch (length) is filled with more history, relics, and stories than most can imagine. The magic of the most hustle and bustle lays here.
Harlemite and native New Yorker Micah, of über-successful local lifestyle brand Only NY, knows this probably better than anyone. He cites the city's unlimited sights, sounds, and pulses as the unlimited source of inspiration for his art. Well, that and his fondness for the tranquility of nature— the complete opposite of the urban jungle. This limbo or understanding of balance, if you will, is what best describes his art's flow, a parallel to the city's momentum and pace.

Maxi Priest | Loving You Is Easy
Easy To Love is a fine representation of lovers' rock, an effortless blend of reggae, R&B and dancehall with universal appeal. The sophistication he brings to these tracks is the mark of true quality. His delivery and phrasing are impeccable, and his choice of material and collaborators are strategic and brilliant.
The title track was a No. 1 hit on reggae charts last summer, evidence that Maxi Priest has a gift for staying fresh. The song features the legendary Jamaican drum and bass duo Sly & Robbie, who've played on some of Maxi's biggest hits, including "Wild World," "Some Guys Have All The Luck," "Close To You," and "Housecall" (featuring Shabba Ranks) as well as the new album track "Every Little Thing." WATCH "Easy To Love" video.
Maxi's been tugging on women's heartstrings ever since the mid-80′s. New and long-term fans alike will relish hearing irresistible tributes of enduring affection like "Loving You Is Easy," "Holiday," "Still In Love," and "Gravity." The soulful "Without A Woman" features Jamaican legend Beres Hammond and even echoes the themes and intensity of James Brown's "It's A Man's Man's Man's World."
There are many more highlights on Easy To Love. While "Hearts Across The World" is a song for our times and pleas for people of all races to love one another, other tracks like "Fire In The Skies" simply defy categorization and are living proof of Maxi Priest's musical versatility. The delicate, aching need of "Angel Wings" also demonstrates just how far reggae has evolved in the new era.

FKA twigs | Two Weeks
The London-based R&B aesthete FKA twigs has been slowly churning out atmospheric, breathy beat-pop since the release of EP1 back in December of 2012. After the release of her daring and distended EP2, one of SPIN's Best R&B Albums of 2013, she's finally gearing up for the release of her debut full-length, appropriately titled LP1. "Two Weeks," the first track from that record, premiered yesterday on Ellie Goulding's BBC Radio 1 takeover, and now today it has an official video.
In the clip, Twigs herself takes a seat on a throne to star as a goddess who can shoot water from the tip of her finger. The intensely choreographed video mirrors the disjointed otherworldliness of the track itself, marrying its digital percussion rumbles and shimmering synth lines to the swooning movements of a couple of background dancers.
This visual is directed by Nabil, who's also handled videos for Nicki Minaj and Arctic Monkeys, in addition to shooting SPIN's Frank Ocean cover story.
LP1 is due out August 12 on Young Turks. The "Two Weeks" video is above, and below are the album's cover and track list.
Taken from the new album, LP1. http://po.st/FKAtwigsLP1
LP1 track list:
1. "Preface"
2. "Lights On"
3. "Two Weeks"
4. "Hours"
5. "Pendulum"
6. "Video Girl"
