Art Talk: Coda | Award Winning
CODA is a studio for architectural and urban research and design established by Caroline O'Donnell in New York in 2008, and now based in Ithaca, New York. Caroline is currently the Richard Meier Professor at Cornell University and has many awards and competitions under her belt. Along with a team of Cornell University architecture students, teaching associates, and alumni, she recently entered the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program, an annual series of competitions that gives emerging architects an opportunity to build projects conceived for PS1's space in Long Island City, Queens.
CODA's winning design, Party Wall, provides visitors with a unique and refreshing experience. It's a large structure that creates shade for visitors, as well as cooling pools and floating mist. VICE and Ray-Ban had the opportunity to meet Caroline and her team while documenting the construction of Party Wall for the Ray-Ban Envision Series, an event and video series that features individuals who have found their purpose in life and stay true to their vision

Off The Record: Christian Rich
Responsible for Earl Sweatshirt's "Chum" from his recently released album Doris, production duo Christian Rich is the focus of our ongoing Off The Record series. Recalling bringing in Chad Hugo of The Neptunes fame, watch as we're walked through the process of finding the initial melody and the happy accident of recording several vocal samples. The organic and raw nature of the session is evidenced not only by their recollection, but by the final product that is "Chum."

The Lark by Gil Kenan: VICE Shorts
Don't you hate it when you come home to find your house burgled and the first thing your husband does is blame you and punch you in the face? I mean, yes, we tend to blame the victim, who makes the dumb decision of shacking up with a man who treats her like a punching bag. However, that doesn't excuse the bad behavior of the hitter. He's probably got his own masculinity issues and other bullshit making him a terrible person. But some people get to a point where they're just bad. If you're going to live with a guy who comes home yelling and swinging at you, taking away the only things that ever mattered to you, you'd think there would come a point where you'd snap and fuck that motherfucker up.
As his thesis film, Gil Kenan tackled the emotional and psychological aspects of this kind of deteriorating relationship in The Lark. It's a simple story: man meets woman, woman falls in love (?), they get married, man takes advantage, woman puts up with it, man goes too far, and woman finally snaps. Where The Lark really achieves its singularity is through camp acting and a wildly imaginative visual palette. Every frame of the film is hand-composited, blending stop-motion, live-action, and claymation into a surreal black and white tale of woe.
Kenan constructs The Lark's entire environment from scratch, building up the house wall-by-wall and window-by-window. Each piece moves with its own internal logic and emphasizes the uneasiness that is overtaking the house and its inhabitants. After the burglary and beating, the woman sits, as any tortured housewife might do, by the window of the crime. A a bird appears in the window and brings hope once more to the woman, which is captured in a spectacular stop-motion silhouette sequence. The husband immediately scolds his wife and kills the bird. Distraught, the woman weeps for the bird, wanting to transform this moment of grief and then, suddenly, the bird is alive again. It becomes her own private martyr and obsession—she tends to the bird, fending off her husband. The bird grows in her mind and soon grows in real life. The bird consumes her world. When the bird reaches a full, six-foot-tall maturity, she already knows who/what she picks. Her husband must pay for his sins. All of the little moments that follow between the bird, the husband, and her stand up as an extremely well told, rethought, and reformed fable of tragedy.

Kevin Hart's: Say It With Your Chest! -- The Animated Series
Legendary actor / comedian Kevin Hart has immortalized his eccentric family members in his numerous stand-up comedy routines. The Hart family now takes center stage as they, along with a young Kevin Hart, tell the misadventures of Kevin Hart and his friends.
Set in today's world, Kevin Hart narrates via voice over episodes guiding us through Young Kevin's feelings and sensibilities. Episodes begin with Young Kevin being presented with a problem or obstacle, then turning to his eccentric group of family members for help or advice. Young Kevin then decides to either use, or discard the family assistance building an air of mystery as to how an episode will conclude.At times Young Kevin will play a central role in a problem, but his role as a "put-upon" kid will remain.

Young Kevin
Hindered by a hormone imbalance that makes him short, but capable of growing a goatee, Young Kevin navigates the treacherous waters of friends, family and childhood as a precocious 8 year old.
Daddy Hart
Married to his La-Z-Boy chair, Daddy Hart is committed to his street proven former drug addict sensibilities. He loves his son, but views the world as the Serengeti and Young Kevin as a lame gazelle.
Uncle Al
A former convict, Uncle Al views the world through a prism of a prisoner. He counsels Young Kevin as though both lived behind bars and his neurotic paranoid filled advice often creates more confusion than solution.
Grandma Hart
Always accompanied by Jesus who is her silent copilot, Grandma Hart wields her advice through scripture and a switchblade. A tenth degree black belt, Grandma Hart is to be feared and respected, even by Jesus.

DANNY DAN THE BEATMAN (History)(Biz Markie Producer|DJ) #DustyFingers
The heavy beat-diggers out there amongst you will know the name DANNY DAN THE BEATMAN. Either from his brief appearance in the short movie THE FUNK HUNT (where he takes a headbutt for his records!), or simply for being a legendary bronx veteran with an incredible arsenal of dope ass breakbeats - there's no denying this cat's qualifications.
DANNY DAN grew up in the early days of Hip Hop and had already begun to DJ Funk, Soul and R&B from the age of 13, but was later influenced by the legendary KOOL DJ HERC to become a drum break junkie. He was fascinated by watching him spin two copies of the same record mixed seamlessly back-to-back.
He hailed from the Bronx 183rd street, and in this area DAN and his crew would rule the streets from 1975 to 1984 involved in organising and spinning at street jams, block parties, school yards etc.. This is where he earned his reputation as a master of drum breaks. DANNY tells us...

Jody Pendarvis is a kooky southern gentleman who has built a ramshackle UFO welcome center in his backyard in rural Bowman, South Carolina. If aliens happen to land around Bowman, they'll be greeted by Jody, who claims he'll be able to talk to them, and his homemade alien spacecraft full of clutter. When Colombians get together, they roll deep. So when we went to Bogotá to sample former Mario Batali pupil Daniel Castaño's classical Italian fare at his restaurant, Emilia Romagna, we brought a big-ass bus to cart around the crew. And true to form, we filled the bus with a rowdy bunch of sous chefs, friends, and other restaurateurs.
After sampling Bogota's eclectic range of culinary styles—including Memphis barbecue, Spanish tapas, and of course, Colombian grilled meats—Daniel and his buddies were pouring an anise-flavored sugar-cane liquor called aguardiente (a national specialty) down one another's throats on our way back to his Brooklyn-inspired restaurant, Gordo, where he whipped up some late-night grub.

You might not know who Arjan Roskam is, but you've probably smoked his weed. Arjan's been breeding some of the most famous marijuana strains in the world—like White Widow, Super Silver Haze, and many others—for over 20 years.
In 1992 he opened his first coffee shop in Amsterdam and has since crafted his marijuana-breeding skills into a market-savvy empire known as Green House Seed Company, which rakes in millions of dollars a year.
He's won 38 Cannabis Cups and has dubbed himself the King of Cannabis.
VICE joins Arjan and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country's rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades. In grower's terms, these are called landraces. We trudge up mountains and crisscross military checkpoints in the country's still-violent south, and then head north to the breathtaking Caribbean coast. As the dominoes of criminalization fall throughout the world, Arjan is positioned to be at the forefront of the legitimate international seed trade.

JAY Z's Life + Times documents Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' recent trip to Camp Bisco Music Festival in upstate New York, as they prepare for the upcoming Budweiser Made In America festival after a long summer stretch of European festival dates. Shon Roka (pronounced Shaun Roca) the DJ also known as Shaun Ortega was born on the west-side of Chicago. He started gaining fame as a bboy in 1991 and later became a member of a well known crew called the BRICKHEADZ. He would perform for such artist and events such as The Roots, KRS One, Immortal Technique, Dougie Fresh, Common, Rhymefest, Cypress Hill, Pharoah Monch, Nas, Diddy, Mariah Carey, Taste of Chicago, Lollapolooza, Looptopia, B96 Summer Bash just to name a few. The BRICKHEADZ also won many breakin' competition nationally and internationally. While Shon Roka was being active as a bboy he was working on his craft of being a DJ.
DJing for w/ Nike, Jordan, Under Armour, Adidas, Vans, Uprise (Chicago) Skateshop for numerous in-stores, sporting events, galleries and corporate outings. Also Shon Roka is a resident DJ post Covid in Chicago at McGee's, Tantrum, Imbibe and Harbee's. While being a DJ, he has been teaching music production and the Art of Skateboarding through Maggie Daley's After School Matters. Also known as Gallery 37.
